How Google actually ranks the Maps pack
The Maps pack, sometimes called the local pack, is the block of three business listings with a map that appears above the normal blue links when someone searches for something local. In Chennai that is most of the commercial searching people do: "dental clinic near me", "gym in Velachery", "AC service Medavakkam", "interior designers OMR". Almost all of it happens on a phone, often while the person is already moving.
Google publishes its local ranking factors openly, and they have not changed in years. There are three: relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well your business information matches what was typed. Distance is how far your listed address is from the searcher, or from the area named in the query. Prominence is how well known and well regarded your business appears to be, drawn from reviews, links, mentions across the web and your normal web search visibility.
Those three interact rather than stack. A very prominent clinic can appear for searches slightly further away than a new one. A perfectly optimised listing ten kilometres from the searcher will still lose to an adequate one four hundred metres away. Understanding which of the three you can actually move is the difference between useful work and wasted months.
| Factor | What Google looks at | How much you control it | Highest value action |
| Relevance | Category, business name, services, description, website content, review wording | High | Correct primary category plus complete service list |
| Distance | Your verified address versus the searcher's location or the place named in the query | Very low | Choose premises deliberately, or add a second genuine location |
| Prominence | Review count and rating, links, citations, brand mentions, organic rankings | Medium, slow | Consistent review generation and local PR over months |
Notice that the factor most people obsess over, keyword stuffing the business name, sits inside relevance and is also against Google's guidelines. Adding "Best" or "Chennai" or a service keyword to your registered trade name can produce a short lift and a suspension later. It is not worth it.
Key takeaway
You can meaningfully improve relevance this week, prominence over a quarter, and distance almost never. Plan your effort in that order and judge results accordingly.
Building a Google Business Profile that earns trust
Your Google Business Profile is the listing itself. It is free, it is the single biggest lever in local search, and most Chennai businesses leave half of it blank. Start by claiming it. If a listing already exists because customers created it, claim ownership rather than making a duplicate, since duplicates split your reviews and can get both entries suppressed.
Verification now varies. Some businesses get a postcard to the registered address, some get a video call or a recorded walkthrough where you show the premises, signage, equipment and some proof that you operate there. Have your Shops and Establishments registration, GST certificate, a utility bill and your signage ready before you start. Video verification fails most often because the person filming cannot show a permanent sign or cannot connect the inside of the shop to the street outside in one unbroken shot.
Then complete every field. Google has said repeatedly that complete listings are more likely to be considered relevant. That means:
- Exact business name as it appears on your board and paperwork, nothing more
- Full address in Indian format, with door number, street, locality, Chennai, Tamil Nadu and the six digit PIN
- A local phone number that actually rings, ideally a Chennai landline or a stable mobile, matching what is printed on your site
- Opening hours including Sunday, plus special hours for Pongal, Diwali and any days you close
- Website URL pointing to the most relevant page, not always the homepage
- Attributes such as wheelchair accessible entrance, women owned, UPI accepted, free parking
- A description of roughly 750 characters written for humans, mentioning your areas served naturally
If you serve customers at their location rather than yours, for example a pest control or appliance repair business, set yourself up as a service area business and hide the address. Do not list a residential address publicly for a field service business, and do not invent addresses in Sholinganallur and Tambaram that you do not occupy. Fake locations are the single most commonly reported form of Maps spam in Indian metros, and they do get removed.
Categories, services and products
Category selection is the highest leverage decision in the whole profile. Your primary category tells Google which searches you are even eligible for. A studio calling itself "Beauty salon" will struggle for "bridal makeup artist" searches if that is the real business. A clinic set to "Medical clinic" instead of "Dermatologist" is competing in the wrong pool entirely.
Pick the one primary category that describes what you fundamentally are, then add secondary categories only for services you genuinely deliver. Five relevant secondaries beat fifteen loose ones, because irrelevant categories dilute the signal and can pull you into searches where your engagement looks poor. Check the categories your top three Chennai competitors use, but copy the logic, not the list.
Under services, add every individual treatment, package or job type with a short description each. A Medavakkam physiotherapy clinic might list sports injury rehabilitation, post surgical physiotherapy, home visits, cupping and dry needling separately rather than lumping them under "physiotherapy". These service entries are indexed and frequently surface in Maps for long tail queries. Products work similarly for retail, cafes and boutiques, and product entries can carry a price in rupees, which filters out enquiries you do not want.
Common mistake
Choosing a broad primary category to "cover everything". Breadth is what secondary categories and the services list are for. The primary category should be the narrowest accurate description of your business.
Photos, posts and the Q&A section
Photos are the most looked at part of a listing and one of the most neglected. Upload genuine photographs of your exterior with the signboard visible, the entrance and how to find it from the main road, the interior, your team at work, equipment, and the finished work itself. Chennai shoppers frequently use the exterior photo to decide whether a place looks legitimate and whether parking is possible. Geotagging images does nothing, since Google strips most metadata, so spend the effort on quality and freshness rather than on EXIF tricks. Adding a handful of new photos every month is more useful than a single large upload at launch.
Google Posts appear on your profile and expire in about a week unless they are offers or events. They are not a strong direct ranking factor, but they keep the listing looking active and they occupy space a competitor otherwise fills. Use them for genuine things: a new treatment, festival timings, a monsoon service offer, a new branch in Perungudi. Write the first sentence as though it is the only one anyone reads, because it usually is.
The Q&A section is public and anyone can answer, including competitors and confused strangers. Seed it yourself with the questions you answer on the phone every day: do you have parking, do you accept insurance, do you serve Sholinganallur, what are the charges, do you work on Sundays. Answer them from the business account so the response is marked as owner provided. Then monitor it, because an unanswered or wrongly answered question sits there for years.
Reviews and review responses
Reviews feed prominence, and review text feeds relevance. When a customer writes "they fixed my inverter in Medavakkam the same day", that is both social proof and a keyword association you could not otherwise buy. BrightLocal's annual Local Consumer Review Survey has consistently found that the large majority of consumers read online reviews before choosing a local business, and that recency matters to them. Both of those line up with how Google behaves.
What works in practice is boring and repeatable. Ask every satisfied customer, at the moment the work is finished, in person, then follow with a WhatsApp message containing your short review link. Do not batch fifty requests in one week and then go quiet for three months, because a sudden spike followed by silence looks unnatural and is a common trigger for review filtering. A steady trickle of three to eight new reviews a month is far better than a burst.
Never buy reviews. The market for paid Google reviews in India is large and the detection has improved sharply. Removed reviews take your rating with them, and repeat offences can get a profile suspended. Similarly, do not offer a discount in exchange for a positive review, which violates Google's policy. You can ask for a review. You cannot buy the sentiment.
Reply to every review, good and bad, within a couple of days. A good reply to a positive review is short, specific and mentions the service without sounding scripted. A good reply to a negative review acknowledges the specific issue, avoids arguing, does not reveal patient or customer details, and moves the conversation to a phone number. Prospective customers read the one star reviews first and they are really judging your response, not the complaint.
An owner who replies calmly to a harsh review converts more readers than an owner with a flawless but silent five star profile.
NAP consistency, citations and geo pages
NAP means name, address, phone. Google cross references your details across the web to decide whether your listing is trustworthy and where you really are. If your address appears as "Medavakkam Main Road" in one place, "Medavakkam Main Rd." in another and an old Velachery address on Justdial, you are sending mixed signals.
Write your NAP once in a document, in one exact format, and use that everywhere. Then work through the directories that matter in India: Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMART where relevant, Practo for clinics, Zomato and Swiggy for food, UrbanCompany listings, plus the general set of Bing Places, Apple Business Connect and Facebook. Fix or claim old entries rather than creating new ones. This is slow, unglamorous work and it is genuinely part of a complete local SEO checklist.
On your own site, add proper location signals. Embed your Google Maps listing on the contact page, mark up your business with LocalBusiness structured data including address, geo coordinates, opening hours and phone, and make sure the same phone number appears in the page text rather than only inside an image.
Geo landing pages help, with a warning. One useful page per area you genuinely serve, with real content about that area, driving times, local landmarks, projects or clients there and area specific FAQs, can rank organically and support the Maps listing. Ten near identical pages for Velachery, Perungudi, Pallikaranai, Madipakkam and so on, where only the place name changes, is doorway page behaviour and Google treats it accordingly. If you cannot write three hundred genuinely different words about an area, do not build the page. Our local SEO services page explains how these pages sit alongside the rest of a site's search strategy.
What to do first
Before building anything new, audit what already exists. Search your business name, your old phone number and your previous address. Duplicate and outdated listings cost more rankings than missing ones.
Proximity limits, spam and redressal
Here is the part most guides skip. Distance is the factor you cannot optimise. If your salon is in Medavakkam, you will not reliably appear in the Maps pack for someone standing in Adyar searching "salon near me", no matter how good your profile is. The radius you can realistically win shrinks as competition density rises, which is why a cafe in a crowded OMR stretch has a smaller effective catchment than one in a quieter residential pocket.
What you can do is widen the searches where you appear rather than the physical radius. Rank organically for "salon in Velachery" style queries with a real page, so you appear below the pack even when you are not in it. Build enough prominence that Google is willing to stretch distance a little. And be honest with yourself about which localities are realistically yours: three neighbourhoods you dominate beat twelve you never appear in.
Chennai categories with heavy spam, packers and movers, locksmiths, appliance repair, immigration consultants and some clinics, are full of listings using fake addresses, keyword stuffed names and virtual offices. You are allowed to fight this. Use the "Suggest an edit" option on the offending listing, and for serious cases file through Google's Business Redressal Complaint Form, which exists specifically for reporting business profiles that violate the guidelines. Include evidence: screenshots, a street view image showing no such business, the registered name from official records. Submit one clear case at a time rather than a long list, and expect weeks, not days.
Tracking performance and a realistic 90-day plan
What to actually measure
The performance section inside your Google Business Profile shows searches that surfaced your listing, split into direct searches for your name, discovery searches for a category, and branded searches. It also shows calls, direction requests, website clicks and messages. Watch the ratio: rising discovery searches means your visibility for category terms is improving, while rising direct searches usually reflects offline marketing.
Add UTM parameters to the website link on your profile so Google Analytics separates Maps traffic from organic. Track calls properly, either with a call tracking number used consistently or by simply logging where enquiries say they found you. Average position in Maps is not a single number, because it varies by where the searcher stands, so a grid based rank tracker that samples multiple points across Chennai is more honest than a single reported rank.
A 90-day plan
| Period | Focus | Main tasks | What good looks like |
| Days 1 to 30 | Foundation | Claim and verify, fix duplicates, set categories, complete every field, upload 20 real photos, standardise NAP, add LocalBusiness schema | Profile 100 percent complete, no duplicates, consistent details on top 10 directories |
| Days 31 to 60 | Content and proof | Add full services and products, seed 10 Q&A entries, start weekly posts, launch the review request routine, publish two genuine area pages | Steady review flow started, discovery searches beginning to rise |
| Days 61 to 90 | Prominence and refinement | Local links and mentions, respond to all reviews, report clear spam listings, review performance data, adjust categories and services based on which queries convert | Appearing in the pack for at least some neighbourhood queries, more direction requests and calls |
Ninety days is enough to fix everything within your control and to see early movement. It is usually not enough to outrank a ten year old competitor with four hundred reviews in the same street. Local search rewards patience, and the businesses that win are the ones still doing the boring parts in month nine. If you also want your business surfaced by AI answer tools, the same foundations matter, which is covered in our piece on AI search and answer engines in India. For anything specific to your category or locality, the contact page is the fastest way to ask.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to rank in the Maps pack in Chennai?
For a new listing in a low competition category, early visibility can appear within four to eight weeks of proper setup. In crowded categories and dense areas like Velachery or OMR, six months or more of consistent reviews, content and local links is more realistic. Anyone promising a top three position in thirty days is guessing or planning to break guidelines.
Can I rank in areas where I do not have an office?
Not in the Maps pack itself, because distance is measured from your verified address. You can rank organically below the pack for area specific queries using genuine location pages, and you can list service areas on your profile so people there understand you will travel. Renting a virtual office purely to create a listing violates Google's guidelines and risks suspension.
Do Google Posts and photos actually affect rankings?
Neither is a strong direct ranking signal. Both affect behaviour, which matters. Listings with current photos and active posts get more clicks, calls and direction requests, and that engagement supports prominence over time. Treat them as conversion tools first and as a mild ranking contribution second, and you will use them correctly.
What should I do if a competitor is using a fake address?
Gather evidence first, including screenshots of the listing, street level imagery showing no such business, and any official record of the registered name. Then use Suggest an edit on the listing and, for persistent cases, Google's Business Redressal Complaint Form. Report one listing at a time with clear proof, and allow several weeks for action. More answers are on the FAQs page.
